Basic info
StarCraft is a military science fiction media franchise created by Chris Metzen and James Phinney and owned by Blizzard Entertainment. The series, set in the beginning of the 26th century, centers on a galactic struggle for dominance among three species — the adaptable and mobile Terrans, the ever-evolving insectoid Zerg, and the powerful and enigmatic Protoss — in a distant part of the Milky Way galaxy known as the Koprulu Sector. The series debuted with the video game StarCraft in 1998. Blizzard Entertainment began planning StarCraft in 1995 with a development team led by Metzen and Phinney. The game debuted at the 1996 Electronic Entertainment Expo and used a modified Warcraft II game engine. StarCraft also marked the creation of Blizzard Entertainment's film department; the game introduced high quality cinematics integral to the storyline of the series.
Fun facts
- When it was first shown to the public in its very early stages, Starcraft looked very much like "Warcraft in space" and was ridiculed for it. This made the team rewrote the engine, overhaul the art and graphics and the rest is history.
- Sarah Kerrigan, the resident badass commando and Queen of Blades, was named after Nancy Kerrigan, Olympic figure skater involved in the famous Tonya story. But, according to people behind SC, Kerrigan vs Tonya is also a dig at Tanya, another resident badass commando from Command&Conquer series.
- You are probably aware that Starcraft is ultra popular in South Korea. Starting in the year 2000, it was televised, advertised and broadcasted via radio - starting with smaller tournaments and cash prizes and eventually ballooned into national sport category, huge prices and multiple TV channels dedicated to it. Several times throughout history there were more people in attendance in Starcraft tournaments then the Super Bowl.
- Starcraft Ghost is a third person action/stealth game where you take on the role of Nova, an elite Ghost unit sent to investigate a conspiracy around a top-secret military project. It marked a very rare occurrence where Blizzard would steer very far from their usual RTS and RPG roots and present a spin off to StarCraft. Sandy, the project was cancelled despite Blizzard building hype about it with a few trailers, screenshots and videos. It is remembered as one of the most famous games we will never get to play.
