Doom

Doom

IDKFA

One of the most recognizable cheat codes in gaming - typing in IDKFA in Doom 1/2 would give you all keys, all weapons and full ammunition. What happens after that is pretty much universal for every player - a chaotic vortex of bullets, shells, rockets and plasma rounds blasts all demons into oblivion - and they can't even hide behind locked doors.

Basic info

Doom is a 1993 first-person shooter (FPS) game developed by id Software for MS-DOS. Players assume the role of a space marine, popularly known as Doomguy, fighting their way through hordes of invading demons from hell. Id began developing Doom after the release of their previous FPS, Wolfenstein 3D (1992). It emerged from a 3D game engine developed by John Carmack, who wanted to create a science fiction game inspired by Dungeons & Dragons and the films Evil Dead II and Aliens. The first episode, comprising nine levels, was distributed freely as shareware; the full game, with two further episodes, was sold via mail order. An updated version with an additional episode and more difficult levels, The Ultimate Doom, was released in 1995 and sold at retail.

Fun facts

  • The game's title was inspired by the scene in "The Color of Money" movie in which someone asks Tom Cruise's character what he has in his custom cue case, to which he replies "Doom".
  • Doom originally had a lot of story and even dialogue, as well as thematically being somewhere between Evil Dead and Aliens. In time, ID failed to acquire any movie licenses and they cut out the extensive story entirely, although this content lived on in comics, books etc.
  • Doom's monsters were originally made to be clay models, photographed in various positions and actions and then scanned and animated in the engine.
  • Doom's soundtrack drew inspiration from famous metal bands such as Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, AC/DC, Alice in Chains, and Black Sabbath. While the inspiration was obvious, metal bands themselves didn't have any issues with this, going so far as to make tributes to Doom in their own songs.
  • Sound effects in the game, despite arguably being made famous because of Doom, are pulled from the popular sound effects gallery that was used in a ton of movies, TV shows and other games.
  • Despite being originally nameless, Doomguy had several names associated with him - he was Flynn "Fly" Taggart in the first novel, John Kane in Doom 3, John "Reaper" Grimm in the movie and Doomslayer in the modern sequel/reboot series.

Cheats

  • Mentioning IDKFA seems redundant but we are going to include it anyways, along with two other cheats perhaps equally as famous:
  • IDKFA - Full health, ammo, weapons, armor and keys
  • IDDQD - Invulnerability
  • IDCLIP - Walk through walls
  • The simplicity and somewhat rhythmic pronunciation of Doom cheats is probably the reason they are stuck in our collective minds forever.
